The Japan-based company has earned a strong reputation for its precision instruments and excellent design.

Measuring Muscle Strength with Medical Dynamometers

Medical dynamometers can accurately measure an individual’s muscle power and strength. It is a useful tool that provides baseline measurements to help determine any dysfunction or underlying medical issues that need to be addressed.

Dynamometers are essential tools for physicians and occupational therapists when subjecting a patient to a functional capacity evaluation or FCE. Issues such as muscle, bone or nerve damage can be identified as patients test their physical limits while applying as much tolerable force as they can through the measurement device.

After finishing a series of tests using a dynamometer, recommendations for allowable workloads or modifications to physical working conditions can then be made to prevent further aggravation or complication of any observed injuries. FCEs are also essential in determining whether an individual qualifies for workers’ compensation or disability benefits.

Aside from providing initial baseline measurements, medical dynamometers allow physicians, physiotherapists, sports scientists and other healthcare professionals evaluate the progression of therapy and rehabilitation treatments.

Professional and amateur athletes can use medical dynamometers to progressively measure the effectiveness of their training regimen. Selecting the right type of medical dynamometer allows you to measure different muscle groups and target which ones need further improvement.

Hand Dynamometer

One of the most common types of dynamometers is the Hand Dynamometer. This handheld dynamometer measures grip strength, which involves engaging the muscles in the forearm, as much as it does the hand and finger muscles. Depending on the model used, it can also be used to test fine motor skills, pinch strength and the strength of individual fingers.

TTM Advanced Hand Dynamometer

The TTM Advanced Hand Dynamometer is based on the popular Smedley spring design, which is known for its durability and ease of use. This type of hand dynamometer has been successfully used for many decades in medical and research institutions, and clinics worldwide and has proven to be a reliable tool for measuring forearm and hand grip strength.

The TTM Advanced Hand Dynamometer has been greatly improved from previous versions with the stronger materials used to make it sturdier and the white dials to make measurements easier to read. The hand grip is now more comfortable with its rubber foam pad and smoother to operate, which further improves its user friendliness.

Features and Specifications

  • Accurately measures forearm and hand grip strength.
  • Time tested Smedley design.
  • Better frame materials and comfort.
  • Accommodates any hand size.
  • Measurement scale from 0 to 100 Kg.
  • Accurate up 0.5 Kg
  • Comes with carrying case for extra protection during storage or travel.

TTM Digital Hand Dynamometer

The TTM Digital Hand Dynamometer is a modernised version of the traditional baseline hand dynamometer. It operates using the same basic concepts that have been previously improved in the Advanced Hand Dynamometer with the addition of a digital LCD readout which makes recording measurements much easier.

The digital scale can make measurements in either kilograms or pounds at the push of a button, and also records up to 20 results using the built-in memory. It features a long lasting rechargeable battery which can be quickly recharged via the USB port. It also has an Auto Off function to prolong the life of the battery when not in use.

Features and Specifications

  • LCD readout for quicker measurements of hand grip strength.
  • Moulded resin and metal frame for durability and rubber pad for comfort.
  • Fits different hand sizes.
  • Accurate up to 110 Kg. Measures in 0.5 Kg.
  • Measurements over 100 Kg are accurate up to the nearest 1 Kg.
  • Comes with carrying case for extra protection during storage or travel.

TTM Shoulder and Arm Dynamometer

The TTM Shoulder and Arm Dynamometer, also known as a Pull Dynamometer, allows accurate muscle strength measurements of each individual arm. Its metal frame construction and ergonomic wooden handles offer added durability and can withstand repeated use for many years.

It uses a relatively simple yet fool proof mechanism and can measure up to 100 kilograms of force. In use, the tester holds one end of the dynamometer while the test subject pulls on the other end while the tester records the results. During the test, the pulling motion isolates and fully engages the shoulder and arm muscles.

Features and Specifications

  • Measures pulling strength of each arm.
  • Measures muscle strength in 0.5 Kg increments from 0 to 100 Kg.
  • Lightweight at 1 Kg.
  • Sturdy metal frame and components.
  • Wooden storage case.

TTM Back Dynamometer

The TTM Back, Chest and Leg Dynamometer offers accurate strength measurements of the back, chest and leg muscles. It features a sturdy wooden base which is used as a platform for secure footing and is height adjustable via the chain links. The length of the chain can also be adjusted to configure the dynamometer to target different muscle groups.

Once a maximum reading is reached during a test, the dial will not move until it is reset.

Features and Specifications

  • Adjustable chain length.
  • Sturdy platform base.
  • Measures up to 300 Kg of force.
