Defibrillators are becoming a common occurrence in the workplace. Many employers are considering adding a defibrillator to their workplace, since it has the potential of saving lives. Of course, defibrillators should only be operated by trained personnel. However, if you are considering adding one to your workplace, here are the essentials you must know.
What Is a Defibrillator?
A defibrillator is a medical device that sends a high-energy electric shock to the heart; this is done when a person goes into cardiac arrest. The electric shock send to the heart is referred to as defibrillation, which can start the heart again and increase the chances of survival.
Defibrillators can be found in many public places these days, although they should never be used by someone who has not enjoyed first aid training. Defibrillators are present in train stations, shopping centres, and even some leisure centres. These defibrillators are known as PAD’s or Public Access Defibrillators and can be used by people who enjoyed first aid training.
If you encounter someone who has suffered a cardiac arrest. Inform first responders immediately and start CPR immediately. Also, find out if there is a defibrillator nearby, which could increase the patient’s chances of survival.
Why do we need to use AED Trainers?
AED training is now a standard part of practice for most first aid courses to ensure that in a time of extreme pressure people have the adeqaute skills to be able to to deal with the situation.
Mentone Educational is pleased to stock Nasco and Zoll as AED training solutions which can be used along side most normal CPR Manikins. Contact us at Mentone Education to discuss with out product experts all your CPR and AED needs.
AED Package with CPR Manikin Trainer
One of the products that can be found at the Mentone Educational Centre is the AED Package with CPR Manikin Trainer. The trainer package allows students of all levels to practice on a realistic device, preparing them for real-life situations.
The AED Package with CPR Manikin Trainer can cover the four recommended AED training scenarios; this includes: pulse returns, no pulse returns, pulse returns with no breathing, and transdermal medications with pulse returns.
Naturally, there are some variations available of the AED Package with CPR Manikin Trainer, so customers can choose the package that suits their training purposes best. Most AED package trainers also come with a limited warranty.
Universal AED Trainer
Some educational institutions or medical professionals require a universal AED trainer for their training purposes, which is also a possibility at Mentone Educational. The Universal AED Trainer enables the educator to prepare students for real-life emergency situations. By pushing on the buttons, you can set a series of events, which teach the student the appropriate steps in certain situations.
Airway Management Trainer
Our advanced airway management trainer is specifically designed to train students who will be applying their skills on paediatric patients in time. The airway management trainer is designed to represent a 5-year-old patient, enabling students to practice their skills in a realistic manner.
The airway management trainer enables students to practice skills such as intubation, ventilation, suction, CPR, and jaw thrust techniques. To ensure a more realistic experience, the airway management trainer features realistic anatomy and landmarks such as teeth, trachea, lungs, vocal chords and more. The perfect way to train for emergency situations involving young children.
Please note that our range contains the basic airway management trainer and the advanced management trainer. Each of these products is suitable for a specific student, so please read the detailed description for these airway management trainers, or contact Mentone Educational Centre when in doubt about the best option.
One of the basic skills most people should have is resuscitation. Unfortunately, most people are not familiar with it; this is one of the reasons why Mentone Educational Centre is so focussed on providing resuscitation simulators for a wide range of students and skill levels.
Mentone Educational Centre offers some advanced resuscitation simulators, but also self-training-based simulators, which can support professionals on the job. The simulators can include self-training courses for medical professionals; this includes BLS learning and training courses.
Practice AED Trainers
AED Trainers – automatic external defibrillator trainers – are specifically designed to support emergency responders. It enables them to get familiar with the use of a clinical AED system. Therefore, it is a training unit that is vital for the training of emergency staff.
Our practice AED trainers contain several pre-programmed scenarios. These scenarios are specifically implemented to familiarise emergency responders with the defibrillator. It also enables them to display the skills needed to use the defibrillator in a genuine emergency.
Advanced Airway Simulators with ECG Simulation and AED Training
Some of our more advanced simulators enable medical professionals to train several skills at once; this is through a series of scenarios set in the system. A good example of such a tool is an advanced airway simulator with ECG simulation and AED training.
With an advanced airway simulator with ECG simulation and AED training enables medical professionals to operate a defibrillator or an external pacer without the use of a manikin. The defibrillator or external pacer connects with an adapter.
The advanced airway simulator also contains built-in circuitry. The circuitry enables medical professionals or medical students to defibrillate and pace immediately in the ECG simulator. Subsequently, they can observe vital information such as ECG rhythms with the PADS connector.
Scenarios can occur with a variety of waveforms for pacing; this includes sinus brady, junctional brady, second degree type I A-V block, second degree type II A-V block, second degree II A-V block with PVs and third-degree A-V block. The system also includes 17 adult/paediatric rhythms.

How Do You Use a Defibrillator?
Even though defibrillators come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, they are generally easy to use. Today, we will disclose how a PAD (Public Access Defibrillator) works, which is the most common type of defibrillator in public places and the workplace.
Before we start this tutorial, always remember that quick CPR can increase a person’s chance of survival. Therefore, swift and confident action is advised when someone suffers from cardiac arrest. However, in some cases, CPR will not be enough to resuscitate the patient in question; this can be the case when an abnormal heart rhythm causes the heart to stop beating. In these cases, the use of a defibrillator can save the person’s life.
Firstly, always start CPR, even when you do not have the defibrillator on hand. Ask someone to bring the public access defibrillator to your location and make sure emergency services are on their way, while you perform CPR on the patient who has suffered a cardiac arrest.
Once you have the defibrillator on hand, have someone else continue CPR while you attach the pads on the patient’s torso. Turn the defibrillator on and follow the instructions the device provides. Attach the pads in the correct position.
When the pads are in place, the machine will request you to not touch the patient while it analyses the heart rhythm. If it can find an abnormal heart beat, it will tell you to push the shock button. Before you push the shock button, make sure to warn everyone to stay clear and not touch the patient. Once the shock is given, the device will tell you to continue with CPR; this should be continued until the patient moves or breathes normally.
How Does a Defibrillator Work?
A defibrillator contains a special processor that analysis the heart rhythm. Once the heart rhythm is analysed, the defibrillator will determine if a shock is required. When the appropriate button is pushed, the device will send an electric current to the heart of the patient; this shock interrupts an irregular rhythm and gets the heartbeat back to normal.
What Does an Automated Defibrillator Do?
An automated defibrillator is designed to use by anyone, even those without much experience in the field of first aid. The automated defibrillator provides you with all the instructions you need on the spot, so you can save someone’s life. Of course, this type of defibrillator is most popular in public places and workplaces.
Are Defibrillators Mandatory in the Workplace?
Changes to Australian law in 2014 state that competency must be present to use an automated external defibrillator (AED); this applies to first aid staff too. Therefore, if you add a defibrillator to the workplace, you must ensure there is staff who had training in the use of the defibrillator.
There are many advantages to having a defibrillator in the workplace, especially in larger working environments. As mentioned earlier, there are some cases where CPR will not be enough, more specifically when the patient has an irregular heart rhythm. Therefore, having a defibrillator in the workplace could save that person’s life, while regular CPR could not.
To add a defibrillator to your workplace, please check out the available options at Mentone Educational. Not quite sure which one is most suitable for the workplace? Do not hesitate to contact the team at Mentone Educational for more information. Customers can also visit our showroom and check out the available defibrillators for the workplace in person.
