by Marjorie A Taylor Third Edition This text sets out a technological framework for the understanding of textile materials, their qualities and behaviour in use. While interesting, a study of the details of manufacturing processes is not essential for the intelligent use and appreciation of textiles. It is important, however, to have a knowledge of the properties of fabrics; that is, how they react to the conditions of use, how their characteristics are related to their construction and finish, and why, therefore, fabrics differ in suitability for various purposes. Often, in the study of textiles by those who are not training for positions in the textile industry, these topics are mistakenly subordinated to a study of the manufacturing processes. It is assumed that the reader has some knowledge of the common methods of producing fibres, yarns and woven fabrics, and of methods of finishing. There is no lack of sources of this information. It has been felt necessary, however, to give information about certain production techniques where this assists in the proper understanding of the product characteristics. It is hoped that this book will provide a basis for satisfaction in the study, use and retailing of textiles, and be a useful introduction to a rewarding career in the textile and clothing industries.
