Founded in 2004 as a Cardiff University spin-out, Medaphor began with a bold vision: to deliver world-class ultrasound simulation that accelerates scanning proficiency in clinical environments. Headquartered in Cardiff (UK) and Georgia (USA), the company combined an innovative ethos with user-focused design, collaborating closely with clinicians to drive technological advances and meet real world training needs.

In 2019, Medaphor evolved into Intelligent Ultrasound Group, widening its scope to include AI-powered clinical tools like ScanNav and NeedleGuide—bringing immersive simulation and smart guidance into both education and practice. After selling its Clinical AI business to GE Healthcare in 2024, the remaining simulation portfolio was acquired by Surgical Science in 2025, ushering in a new era of global reach and integrated training solutions.

Under Surgical Science’s umbrella, the Cardiff-based simulation team continues to deliver high-fidelity products including:

• ScanTrainer – obstetrics, gynaecology, and general medical ultrasound simulator with real-time feedback.

• HeartWorks – echocardiography training tool engineered for cardiac anatomy and sonography.

• BodyWorks Eve – a Point-of-Care Ultrasound (PoCUS) patient simulator rich with real patient cases and pathologies.

With over 500 systems installed in more than 300 institutions across over 30 countries, their solutions remain trusted worldwide. At the same time, their AI innovations powered by GE are enhancing ultrasound scanning globally.
